Week of December 2-6
Our first week of December! This week we learned what a Legacy is and we thought about what kind of classroom legacy we want to leave behind after this year. We will be writing essays about our classroom legacy. We also were able to participate in a zoom call with Kenneth Oppel, the famous writer of Inkling and Silverwing. We learned about his writing which students could reflect on for their own writing. What an exciting week! There are only two more weeks left until Christmas break!

Week of November 25-29

This week we had a full week. We continued to work on Badminton skills and even played a few Badminton games for PE class. We worked on organization in our paragraph writing and used different graphic organizers to help us organize what we are thinking. We worked on a French project where we researched different francophone countries. We also visited the Michael J. Fox theatre for the Young People's Concert where we watched The Leading Ladies. They showed us different instruments that you could sign up for in Grade 7 band class. Although we had a busy week, it seemed to go by quickly!

Week of November 18-21

Our school is hosting a Toy Drive for the Burnaby Christmas Bureau. Families are welcome to donate new, unwrapped toys to the school until December 6. These toys will go to families in need who may not be able to afford gifts this season. Please consider donating a toy to our Toy Drive. There are other fundraisers as well posted throughout the school by the PAC. Feel free to take a look and see if any of them interest you. There are fundraisers such as a purdy's chocolate fundraiser amongst others. Generosity is a way to help our hearts grow bigger!

Week of November 12 - 14

We had another short week this week. Monday was Remembrance Day. We took the day off to remember and respect those who fought for our freedom. Our assembly for Remembrance Day was last week on Friday. We had 2 students who brought candles to the stage in a beautiful ceremony. This week we also worked on colourful Picasso cubism self-portraits. We continued using different serving techniques in badminton for PE. Some students had fun decorating the class for Christmas. It is looking very festive in our classroom!

Week of October 28 - November 1

This week has been very busy! Grade 5's had a Math test about estimation and whole numbers. We continued working on building our trading posts. For Science, we researched information about different planets. We had a Halloween assembly on Thursday and we gained enough points to watch a movie in the afternoon! We watched the Garfield movie to celebrate Halloween. On Friday afternoons we have community time. We have a chance to spend time and interact with our friends in other classes. I can't believe we are in a new month already!

Week of October 15-18

This week we had a chance to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday on Monday. There was no school on Monday. We continued to work hard this week as we read wonder. On Friday, we participated in the student vote. Students had a chance to participate in a mock vote practicing what it would be like to vote in the election. This week we also started our Science unit about the Solar System. We completed a lot of work this week despite it being a short week.

Week of October 7-11

This week we continued working on our stories about someone waking up on another planet. I am excited to read them! For Social Studies, we worked on our projects creating visuals and a report about what life would look like at a trading post. We also created collage art inspired by Henri Matisse. We chose symbols of things that were important to us and created a collage about them. Lastly, we had picture day on Friday.

Week of October 1-3

This week we only had a 3 day week. Monday was a holiday for Truth and Reconciliation. Friday was a holiday. Although we had a short week, we were able to accomplish a lot. We started on our Social Studies projects about creating a trading post. In gym we also started a volleyball unit and learned the different skills needed to play such as volleying, bumping, and serving. We tested out our ADST balloon powered cars. We accomplished a lot this week!

Week of September 23-27

This week we had 2 early dismissals on Wednesday and Thursday. I was able to meet with most parents and discuss goals for students. I enjoyed meeting and getting to know everyone. It feels like the week has flown by. Friday was orange shirt day as we commemorated those who suffered in residential schools. We also listened in on a Zoom call to learn more about indigenous history. Monday is a holiday called "National Day for Truth and Reconciliation". We don't have school that day so that we can reflect on the past and improve the future. I hope everyone has a great long weekend!

Week of September 9-20

Welcome to Division 9! This week we have started to get into our routines and schedules. I have posted our morning schedules on the outside window so that you can see where we will be in the building in the mornings. We have started our Social Studies unit on the Fur Trade and we started Math. Ms. Wilk's will be teaching math for the Grade 4's and Ms. Barrera will be teaching math for the Grade 5's. We have started a Pop Art project which we are creating. We also have started an ADST project building a balloon powered car. We have a lot to learn and a lot of memories to make this year. I am looking forward to it!
