Week of June 3-6
This week was short with a Pro-D Day on Monday. We started a summer birthday marathon where we were able to sing "Happy Birthday" to those students who have birthdays in the summer. We also attended an Entrepreneur Fair put on by Ms. Lal's class. They created products and sold them to the school. It was awesome to see their creativity at work. We also had an early dismissal on Friday at 2pm which made the week feel extra short! The weather is getting hotter and we are getting closer to summer break.

Week of May 26-30
This week we accomplished many things. For Science, we started a project where we have to create an amusement park where the rides use the different simple machines in their design. Students first created a blueprint of their amusement park. Now the fin part - they are making their blueprints come to life with different materials like cardboard, popsicle sticks, straws, clay, etc. I am excited to see the finished products!
Week of May 20-23
We had another short week this week. Monday was Victoria Day and everyone had a chance to rest and recover over the long weekend. We also finished working on our newspapers last week. They turned out looking like real newspapers! This week we started a new unit on Fractured Fairy Tales. We read a few Fractured Fairy Tales and started creating our own stories. We also started working on a "Choice Homework" for our Simple Machines Science unit. Students were able to choose which assignments they wanted to complete. The assignments included definitions, brochures, and creating a quiz. We also have buddies every week. This week we had a nature scavenger hunt outside with our little buddies. We looked for different textures and colours in nature.
Week of May 12-16
We had a week full of events. This week we had class picture day. Our class took a picture at the front of the school. There was also a whole school photo and club photos. We also had Twin Day on Thursday where you could dress up like someone else in the school. On Friday, we had a walk-a-thon to raise money for school supplies and equipment. Grade 4's also had a math test. What a busy week!
Week of May 5 - 9
We had a wonderful week! The sun has been shining and spring has arrived. We usually head outside at the end of the day for Daily Physical Activity (DPA) where students get some vitamin D and can play and enjoy some time with their friends. This week we also prepared some Mother's Day art where we designed and decorated bookmarks for our mothers. For Science, We also started our unit on Simple Machines. We learned about an inclined plane, wedge, and screw. Simple machines were invented to make our lives easier. Simple machines are used all around us in transportation, in the kitchen, at school. They are everywhere!
Week of April 28-May 2
We had an exciting day on Friday, May 2. Our class went to Science World in Vancouver to learn more about Science in the world around us. We looked at exhibits about animals, the human body, extreme sports, graphic designs, physics, mind puzzles, nature, and more. We had a workshop all about coding and using microbits to display various faces and lights using different codes. It was a fun filled day with lots of learning and fun!
Week of April 22-25
We had a week full of projects. Students continued to work on their projects in different subjects. We continued working on embroidery with Ms. Wilks. We worked on math projects where we are making Truss Bridges. We also continued working on a Social Studies assignment where we had to think about the future of Canada's energy usage. In gym, we continued playing soccer and working on soccer skills. We had a short week but a busy week!
Week of April 14-18
This was a busy week. We had lots of events that happened this week. Ms. Wilks has been teaching our class how to do embroidery and we are working on embroidering towels. We worked on creating maps for Social Studies which outlined physiographic regions and natural resources. We looked at important parts of a map such as compass and legend. Grade 5's also started a math project creating truss bridges out of popsicle sticks. We also continued working on writing newspaper articles for language arts.

Week of March 31-April 4
Welcome back to our last term of the school year! We have a lot of exciting things ahead of us. Our school this year is signed up to learn a Brazilian martial art called Capoeira. We will be presenting in a few weeks what we have learned. We also have a field trip planned in May. We started a Social Studies unit on Natural Resources. We also started a French restaurant project using food vocabulary. I hope this term will be filled with lots of learning and fun memories. We have grown a lot since September and have so much more to experience!
Week of February 3-14
We have entered into a new month and new opportunities. We have finished up our Social Studies unit on government and citizenship and we have moved on to Science unit all about energy. For Language Arts, we have been using Figurative Language in our poetry. For Grade 5 math, we have been calculating area of their "dream house". We also had a shape scavenger hunt with our buddies and helped them make Valentine's bags. On Friday Feb. 7, we went skating and we had a blast! We had so much fun and were very tired afterward. For Career, we learned more about the origin of our names and reflected on our different cultural differences. On Friday Feb. 14, we celebrated Valentine's Day and handed out candies and cards to our classmates. It definitely has been a busy start of the month!
Week of January 27-31
January has been a long month and it is coming to an end. We have a lot of assessments for Math, Language Arts, and Social Studies. We have had lots of cold and rainy weather. Also, we have had lots of fun and laughs in class. We had an assembly to celebrate Lunar New Year and Black Excellence. We created zentangles for the New Year. We also created booklets based on civic buildings that we researched for Social Studies.
Weeks of January 6 - 24
We have started a new year! We've already accomplished a lot. We've been learning about government and citizenship in Canada. We've learned different family words in French and had a French quiz. We've started to learn about different figurative language in poetry and narratives. We've also been learning about basketball and soccer in PE class. We also had a chance to learn about LED lights during the second Young People's Concert at the Michael J. Fox Theatre. It has been a great start to the year!
Week of December 16-20
This is our last week of school in 2024! What a great year we have had so far. Time has flown by and we have already completed one term! We have had many memories and laughs in Division 9. I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday. May the Christmas season be peaceful, joyful, and wonderful. I will see everyone after the new year on January 6, 2025!
Week of December 2-6
Our first week of December! This week we learned what a Legacy is and we thought about what kind of classroom legacy we want to leave behind after this year. We will be writing essays about our classroom legacy. We also were able to participate in a zoom call with Kenneth Oppel, the famous writer of Inkling and Silverwing. We learned about his writing which students could reflect on for their own writing. What an exciting week! There are only two more weeks left until Christmas break!
Week of November 25-29
This week we had a full week. We continued to work on Badminton skills and even played a few Badminton games for PE class. We worked on organization in our paragraph writing and used different graphic organizers to help us organize what we are thinking. We worked on a French project where we researched different francophone countries. We also visited the Michael J. Fox theatre for the Young People's Concert where we watched The Leading Ladies. They showed us different instruments that you could sign up for in Grade 7 band class. Although we had a busy week, it seemed to go by quickly!
Week of November 18-21
Our school is hosting a Toy Drive for the Burnaby Christmas Bureau. Families are welcome to donate new, unwrapped toys to the school until December 6. These toys will go to families in need who may not be able to afford gifts this season. Please consider donating a toy to our Toy Drive. There are other fundraisers as well posted throughout the school by the PAC. Feel free to take a look and see if any of them interest you. There are fundraisers such as a purdy's chocolate fundraiser amongst others. Generosity is a way to help our hearts grow bigger!
Week of November 12 - 14
We had another short week this week. Monday was Remembrance Day. We took the day off to remember and respect those who fought for our freedom. Our assembly for Remembrance Day was last week on Friday. We had 2 students who brought candles to the stage in a beautiful ceremony. This week we also worked on colourful Picasso cubism self-portraits. We continued using different serving techniques in badminton for PE. Some students had fun decorating the class for Christmas. It is looking very festive in our classroom!
Week of October 28 - November 1
This week has been very busy! Grade 5's had a Math test about estimation and whole numbers. We continued working on building our trading posts. For Science, we researched information about different planets. We had a Halloween assembly on Thursday and we gained enough points to watch a movie in the afternoon! We watched the Garfield movie to celebrate Halloween. On Friday afternoons we have community time. We have a chance to spend time and interact with our friends in other classes. I can't believe we are in a new month already!
Week of October 15-18
This week we had a chance to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday on Monday. There was no school on Monday. We continued to work hard this week as we read wonder. On Friday, we participated in the student vote. Students had a chance to participate in a mock vote practicing what it would be like to vote in the election. This week we also started our Science unit about the Solar System. We completed a lot of work this week despite it being a short week.
Week of October 7-11​
This week we continued working on our stories about someone waking up on another planet. I am excited to read them! For Social Studies, we worked on our projects creating visuals and a report about what life would look like at a trading post. We also created collage art inspired by Henri Matisse. We chose symbols of things that were important to us and created a collage about them. Lastly, we had picture day on Friday.
Week of October 1-3​
This week we only had a 3 day week. Monday was a holiday for Truth and Reconciliation. Friday was a holiday. Although we had a short week, we were able to accomplish a lot. We started on our Social Studies projects about creating a trading post. In gym we also started a volleyball unit and learned the different skills needed to play such as volleying, bumping, and serving. We tested out our ADST balloon powered cars. We accomplished a lot this week!
Week of September 23-27

This week we had 2 early dismissals on Wednesday and Thursday. I was able to meet with most parents and discuss goals for students. I enjoyed meeting and getting to know everyone. It feels like the week has flown by. Friday was orange shirt day as we commemorated those who suffered in residential schools. We also listened in on a Zoom call to learn more about indigenous history. Monday is a holiday called "National Day for Truth and Reconciliation". We don't have school that day so that we can reflect on the past and improve the future. I hope everyone has a great long weekend!

Week of September 9-20
Welcome to Division 9! This week we have started to get into our routines and schedules. I have posted our morning schedules on the outside window so that you can see where we will be in the building in the mornings. We have started our Social Studies unit on the Fur Trade and we started Math. Ms. Wilk's will be teaching math for the Grade 4's and Ms. Barrera will be teaching math for the Grade 5's. We have started a Pop Art project which we are creating. We also have started an ADST project building a balloon powered car. We have a lot to learn and a lot of memories to make this year. I am looking forward to it!
